Bringing confidence, character, and a refined sense of personal style to the stage, Dave Cowan claimed his first major title at The Ned Prix de Fashion 2026, taking out the 3 Wise Men Menswear Award on Champions Day at Ellerslie Racecourse. Having competed in the menswear competitions before, Dave’s appreciation for classic race-day dressing paid off with a standout look that balanced seasonal inspiration with impeccable tailoring.
He reflects on the thrill of the win, the details behind his autumn-inspired outfit, and what continues to draw him back to the style and spectacle of racewear fashion.
Congratulations on winning the 3 Wise Men menswear award, how did it feel when your name was announced?
Thank you! It is quite nerve racking being up there, so hearing your name being called out for a win was fantastic.
What was the atmosphere like competing on Champions Day at Ellerslie Racecourse and what was your favourite moment from the day?
The atmosphere at Ellerslie is always great, but this event was certainly a level up. It felt like everyone was up for a great day. My favourite moment obviously this win but also picking a winner in the 4th!
How long have you been interested in race-day fashion and menswear styling?
I’ve always loved the classical “races” attire, who doesn’t love an excuse to get the fedora out into the sunshine? It’s a great opportunity to be a bit more flamboyant too.
What inspired you to put your name forward for the menswear competition this year?
My partner Philippa won an equestrian event the week before – so there was definitely some pressure to compete for a sash on the day. I was very relieved to deliver!
Tell us about your winning look, how would you describe the style and inspiration behind it?
The overall theme was Autumn. Browning leaves with a touch of floral colour still clinging on to Summer.
How important is tailoring and fit when creating a standout race day look for men?
It’s the number one factor. Anyone can look like a potato in an ill-fitting $3000 suit! Vinny at SABE Bespoke House does my tailoring and he is an artist. Cannot praise Vinny’s work highly enough.
What do you think the judges responded to most about your outfit?
Definitely the Boutonniere! It’s the one thing the people consistently comment on. The lovely ladies at the Wild Bunch in Remuera are spectacular, so creative and talented!
Do you have any pieces in mind that you’re going to spend your voucher on at 3 Wise Men?
A suit that will look good in the sunshine, enjoying a Syrah in the sunshine over on Waiheke.
What advice would you give other men thinking about entering racewear competitions?
Have fun. Enter and have your friends come up and cheer you on. The more guys that get involved, the louder the crowd is. C’mon gents, do it!
Will we see you back competing again next season?
I will be – the Ellerslie event is easily the best presented and managed in in New Zealand. Thank you very much to everyone involved – you make the effort worthwhile.
