Great Northern Day - Saturday 4th September, Ellerslie RacecourseRaced over a gruelling 6400m, horses and jockeys will jump 25 fences and gallop up and over the famous Ellerslie Hill three times in a bid to win New Zealand's 'Great Race' - the Great Northern Steeplechase; a race founded on courage, stamina and sheer determination for both horse and rider.

HE DID IT! 


Auckland Racing Club congratulates the connections of iron horse - Hypnotize, who has written himself into the history books in winning his third Great Northern Steeplechase. A feat only achieved by one other horse (Hunterville) in The Great Race's 126 year history.

  • General admission - $5pp
    • Children under 15 years free
    • Fathers Day Special!  Dads get in free when escorted by their children
  • Ascot Stand tickets - $10pp (purchase on the day from the Raceday Office)
  • First race (of 10) - 11.30am
  • NZ Mounted Games Team Demonstration - 1.10pm - 1.25pm
  • Great Northern Hurdle - 1.38pm
  • NZ Mounted Games Team Demonstration - 1.5pm - 2.00pm
  • Great Northern Steeplechase - 2.44pm
  • Last race - 4.46pm


Any cars parked in the Southern Motorway carpark will need to be removed by midnight as there is a car fair in this area the following morning (Sunday 5th September). All cars remaining in this carpark from the raceday will be towed at the owners' risk / expense.
